TAIWAN SHOULD BEWARE OF BEING A US-CHINA PAWN|

US President-elect Trump's remarks on the One China policy has been read as him considering the policy negotiable. Under Trump's leadership, which officially begins on Jan. 20 next year, analysts believe that the US will only move to benefit itself and so Taiwan should not let its guard down. Pan-green legislators said that Trump's attitude to one China is a double-edged sword. Former President Ma Ying-jeou, on the other hand, said that before Trump officially takes office it's impossible to assess any implications. Before he has even taken office US President-elect Trump has pressed a raw nerve, the 44 year-old one China policy which is sensitive for Taiwan, China and the US. As the key piece in the puzzle, Taiwan has to look carefully at Trump's pronouncements and see if it just being used as a pawn in the US-China relationship. ==MA YING-JEOU former ROC President== Mr. Trump is not yet the US president. If he continues to use this sort of language after Jan. 20, drawing conclusions then will be more meaningful. The former president made no further comments. However, Democratic Progressive Party legislator Luo Chih-cheng said that any possible Trump denial of the one China policy was likely to be a double-edged blade. The US wants to negotiate with China, but if the one China policy is not a pre-condition, then it is a bargaining chip and Taiwan along with it. Obviously, this is not good for Taiwan. ==LUO CHIH-CHENG DPP legislator== He can accept the one China policy, but he can also reject it, depending on what deals he makes with China. So for us, of course, we don't think this is a good policy, we don't think Taiwan's place should be limited to the framework of a one China policy, as a basis for US-Taiwan interaction. Analysts say that while on the surface, if Trump does not espouse the one China policy, it may appear to be beneficial to Taiwan, but historically the US has only ever moved to benefit itself. In 1979, the establishment of relations between the US and China and the three major communiqués showed clearly the international reality of the sacrifice of Taiwan and even now, whether in trade or arms purchases, such a possibility should not be taken lightly. ==TSAI MING-YAN Prof. National Chung Hsing University Grad Inst. Intl Politics== Taiwan does not want to the one China policy, so if this is traded off with China, then it does not damage Taiwan, but what we need to note is, next time, will he trade off something that Taiwan does care about, for example any trade with Beijing that sacrifices arms purchases for Taiwan. Analysts say although Trump raised the issue, as yet he has not chosen his security or foreign affairs staff and his policy is still unclear. In Taiwan-US relations, Taiwan cannot be passive. There needs to be mutual beneficial behavior based the US' national self-interest, if there is to be any future US-Taiwan cooperation. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
