PARENT REPS QUESTION HAVING LGBT ISSUES IN SEX EDUCATION MATERIALS|教科書呈現多元性別.同性戀 家長質疑

On Dec. 11, the Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung for the first time held a conference to discuss educational issues with parent representatives from across Taiwan. During the meeting, several parents questioned the appropriateness of having LGBT issues and same-sex relationships included in sex education materials. The Minister of Education said that all the materials were written based on clear regulatory guidance and that it aims to help students understand gender equity and the importance of emotional education. On Dec. 11, the Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung met with 120 parent representatives to discuss about educational issues face to face. Many parents focused on the issue of gender equity education since they are worried that the portrayal of LGBT people and same-sex romantic relationships in sex education materials will have a negative effect on high school students and under. That's why it makes us parents worried. ==PAN WEN-CHUNG, Minister of Education == The contents are based on gender equity education. We have to give students emotional education and let them understand gender equity. In addition, parent representatives called on the MOE that for the sake of campus safety, the government should not withdraw military training instructors from school campuses. ==MS. WANG, parent representative== Before campus safety is ensured and extensive supporting measures are in place, military training instructors cannot be withdrawn from school campuses. ==LIN TENG-CHIAO, Deputy Minister of Education== If military training instructors are to be withdrawn from school campuses, we will arrange security guards on campuses. We will handle this properly. Moreover, the Joint Board, College Recruitment Commission's plans to push for reforms on college entrance exam and student recruitment were questioned by a lot of parents. They are worried that the students' personal learning portfolio, used when applying for universities, can be faked and thus leading to unfairness. Pan said that new plans are still under discussion, and the MOE will make decisions after careful consideration.
