250,000 COME TOGETHER TO DEMAND MARRIAGE EQUALITY RIGHTS|婚姻平權音樂會 25萬人凱道促修民法

On Dec 10, Human Rights Day, civil groups in support of equal marriage rights held a concert for marriage equality. Many singers performed on stage to support marriage equality. The organizers estimated that over 250,000 peopled attended the event. Before the concert, some youth groups protested against the Civil Code amendment bill and asked for a referendum on marriage equality. ==NS== Marriage equality is a basic human right. Civil society groups from all over Taiwan came together in solidarity to voice their support for marriage equality. The theme of the event is "protecting life and standing up for marriage equality". They called on President Tsai Ing-wen to fulfill her campaign promise and legalize same-sex marriage. ==JENNIFER LU, senior researcher, Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline== We are not asking for privilege. The state should treat every citizen equally. Everyone is entitled to their rights on this land. The concert began at 3 in the afternoon. Over 23 groups of celebrities showed up. Some of them performed on stage, and some of them sat among the crowd to show their support. ==BELLE YU, TV host== You can decide how big your world is, but you cannot force others to live in your small world. ==LO PEI-YING, entertainer== President Tsai, our tourism industry is failing. If we organize more LGBTQ events, Taiwan can also be the shining beacon in Asia. Besides celebrities, industries, KMT, DPP, and New Power Party politicians all came out in support of marriage equality. However, ahead of the concert, over 10 youth groups gathered outside the Legislative Yuan in protest of same-sex marriage. They claimed they were bullied at school. They rejected the amendment bill and said same-sex marriage should be decided by a referendum. ==CHANG Protect Family Values Students Org.== We like people in the LGBT community. We don't dislike them, but we're against any amendment to the Civil Code. This is not discrimination. The concert continued until 8 o'clock, with rainbow color laser beams forming the messages of "We are humans. We have love." and "Civil Code amendment for marriage equality" projected on the wall of the Presidential Office.
