DPP, PFP JOIN FORCES, DEFEAT KMT REFERENDUM PROPOSAL|藍推降公投門檻付二讀 綠橘聯手反對

To promote its referendum against importing foodstuffs from radiation affected areas of Japan, on Dec. 9, the Kuomintang caucus proposed a second reading for an amendment of the threshold for referendums. The amendment proposed to lower the supporting number of legislators for a referendum to one quarter. The People First Party, which had originally supported the motion had a fit of buyers remorse and voted against it. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party then defeated the proposal by superior numbers at vote. The debate over imports of foodstuffs from radiation-affected areas of Japan continues apace. The Kuomintang caucus launched a petition to hold a referendum on the issue. It also proposed a second reading for an amendment to referendum legislation in the Legislative Yuan to lower the threshold for legislative support to one quarter of legislators for issues other than that of national territory and nomenclature. ==LIAO KUO-TUNG KMT caucus convenor== The main point is that for general issues the threshold be lowered so that there is more opportunity to resort to direct democracy on more issues. ==LEE YEN-HSIU KMT legislator== We hope that the DPP will allow the threshold to be lowered and directly reflect public opinion. The KMT caucus mobilized for the vote as didi the DPP caucus which accused the KMT of political manoeuvering. ==KER CHIEN-MING DPP caucus convenor== The KMT proposal for referendums will bring chaos, it is illogical, on the issue of referendums, fundamentally, they are just engaging in political manoeuvering. ==CHAO TIEN-LING Chair, Internal Affairs Committee== They want to turn it into a reveiw of national law, the ruling party isn't going to dance to that tune. The PFP also felt that the KMT proposal to lower the threshold for referendums could lead to frequent referendums and a waste of public resources, making it harder for the government to operate so it joined the DPP in voting and defeated the proposal.
