The government decided to hold three additional public hearings on whether to lift a ban on food products from five radiation-affected prefectures in Japan. On Dec 1's meeting to discuss the issue, KMT Vice Chairman Hau Lung-bin, former Health Minister Yang Chih-liang, together with civil groups, join hands to initiate a national referendum on the matter. Yang accused Japan Interchange Association chairman Ohashi Mitsuo of harming Taiwanese people's health and said that food products, especially seafood, should in no way be allowed to sell in Taiwan.
On Dec 1, former Health Minister Yang Chih-liang, former EPA Minister Hau Lung-bin, together with civil groups, called for a referendum on lifting a food import ban from radiation-affected prefectures in Japan. Yang said the import of these food products, especially seafood, should in no way be allowed to sell in Taiwan.
==YANG CHIH-LIANG, former Health Minister==
Ohashi Mitsuo is a jerk. The current Japanese government has never showed respect for Taiwan. Japanese seafood from radiation affected areas should be prohibited. I am willing to debate with the Japanese government. Radioactive wastewater has been discharged into the sea for over 5 years. Do you still think we can consume seafood products from those areas?
The referendum question is temporarily set to be "Do you support the government's decision to lift a ban on agricultural products from Fukushima nuclear disaster zones in Japan?" The KMT caucus said starting from Dec., they will initiate a signature campaign to amend the Referendum Act and lower referendum threshold.
==LIAO KUO-TUNG, KMT caucus whip==
We must utilize the power of referendum to let the government understand that their decision is not only against public opinion, but it is also at the expense of public health.
The Executive Yuan decided to hold three additional public hearings. On yesterday's (Dec.1.) meeting, the name of the public hearings sparked a controversy because it was titled as "Japanese food products", rather than "radiation-affected Japanese food products".
==LAI HSIAO-FEN, Homemaker United Foundation Secretary General ==
I suggested that the word "radiation-affected" should be added into the public hearing's name.
==WU JUI-PI, Taiwan Assoc. for Food Sci. and Tech. Honorary Director==
Before things are confirmed, we should not call these food products as "radiation-affected".
The Executive Yuan said they respect KMT legislators pushing for a national referendum to deal with the controversial issue.
