To promote the global Buy Nothing Day, Greenpeace Taiwan arranged for a female giant wearing a dress made from recycled clothes to stage a runway show at the busy Ximending shopping district in Taipei. Buy Nothing Day is a movement that urges people to reduce consumption and lead a simple lifestyle. Surveys conducted by Greenpeace show that globally people spent US$1.8 trillion on ready to wear last year alone. A female giant appeared at Ximending, wearing a dress made of recycled clothes and did the catwalk with a group of models to promote the Buy Nothing Day campaign launched by the Canadian artist Ted Dave. It's a protest against overconsumption and the return to a simpler life, starting with buying less clothes. ==REPORTER WITH MS. HUANG== Did you ever buy clothes that you never wore or just wore once? Yes Will you do the same thing again? Yes. I'll probably do it again. Because you cannot resist the desire to shop? That's right. ==REPORTER WITH MR. HE== I'll try to control my urge to shop. No, actually I have been trying to control it, but I have failed. According to Greenpeace surveys, clothing overconsumption is the worst. Sales revenues for ready-to-wear garments grew from US$1 trillion in 2002 to US$1.8 trillion last year, and the number is still climbing. Compared to 15 years ago, per capita clothing consumption increased by 60%. However, over half of purchased clothes are thrown away. The more people buy, the more they throw away. ==LO KO-JUNG Greenpeace Taiwan project manager== Overconsumption contributes to water pollution, environmental pollution, and human rights abuse to laborers. Fast fashion is about producing low-cost clothing at a rapid pace. In the process, workers are sacrificed, having to endure poor work environment and low wages. Stores put up signs with slogans of all kinds of promotions to encourage consumers to buy more. Greenpeace is calling on people to reflect upon the damage to the environment and the exploitation of labor that are caused by overconsumption. Reducing consumption is being friendly to the environment.
