LABOR GROUPS CONTINUE PROTESTS, BUT AMENDMENTS ALREADY UNDERWAY|不滿砍假 勞團.學生突襲總統官邸抗議

On Nov. 18, youth and labor groups, unhappy at the cut of seven day's national holiday, stormed the President's official residence and then the Presidential Office Building. There was conflict with police as they demanded that the amendments to legislation be withdrawn, otherwise they would escalate their protest action. The Presidential Office responded that different viewpoints must be respected. Holding banners and surging forward 20 or more students and labor groups, dissatisfied with the President's cut of seven days' national holiday tried to enter the Presidential office building. The police held the protestors back and scuffles broke out. The protestors were angry because the Legislative Yuan's Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee held an overnight meeting on Nov. 17 and passed on amendments to the Labor Law to the legislative committee. These included leaving the 'one day's rest, one flexible day off' and cutting seven day's national holiday items for discussion between the government and opposition legislators. Labor groups say that the administration has reneged on its election promises and called for President Tsai to come out and face them. ==HUNG SHIH-TING Nat. Chengchi University labor rights group == Yesterday the 37th clause of the Labor Law was passed and we still didn't see you, the President, do anything about the cutting of seven days holiday from the labor law. The protest started in the morning as students and labor groups stormed the President's official residence and had a standoff with police, they then turned to the main door of the Presidential Office building. In the afternoon they went to the Legislative Yuan and shouted at the ruling party, angry that none of the superior in number of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party legislators had come to the public hearings on the 'one day's rest, one flexible day off'. They were angry that the ruling DPP party has shown such disregard for workers' rights and insisted on cutting seven day's national holiday. ==KUO KUAN-JUN workers' rights protest group== Actually, on Nov. 15 and 16, representatives from all sides all expressed opinions and said clearly that all parts of society do not support cutting seven days holiday, but in the end, the ruling DPP forced through the amendment in the committee to send to the legislature. We cannot accept this action. The 'one day's holiday, one flexible day off' continues to be a bone of contention with labor groups continuing hunger strikes in protest. They threaten to escalate action if the amendments are not withdrawn. The Presidential Office just responded that the amendments were already in progress in the legislature and different views must be respected.
