On November 16, the Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee of the Legislative Yuan, held a public hearing to resolve controversies over amendments to the Labor Standards Act. Clashes between labor groups and Chen Ying, who served as the chairman of the meeting, erupted after Chen declared a rest break in response to sustained interruptions. Labor groups withdrew from the afternoon session of the hearing and staged a sit-down protest at the entrance of the Legislative Yuan. ==LABOR REPRESENTIVE== Chairman, you, don't run away. DPP legislator Chen Ying fell to the floor during a scuffle at a public hearing. Labor activist Hsu Wei-dong, who had been on a hunger strike for over 280 hours, fainted and fell to the floor as well. The two were sent to the hospital, while the chaos continues at the public hearing. On November 16, the Legislative Yuan held a public hearing on the controversial amendments to the Labor Standards Act. The Labor groups were unpleasant, as only two DPP legislators attended the meeting. Therefore, they asked Chen to deal with the problem, but without a satisfying result. Clashes started after Chen declared a rest break in response to sustained interruptions. Labor groups said the public hearing was not held to communicate with the public but only for formalities. Therefore, they left the public hearing held in the afternoon and staged a sit-down protest at the entrance of the Legislative Yuan. ==JEN SHUI-LIU, Manufactures United General Assoc. of Industrial Park VP== At this stage, we should all set aside personal feelings and work to pass the bill first. After the bill is passed, we can still make amendments and review the bill. If a company goes out of business, then employees have to go find a new job. ==HSIN PING LUNG, Assoc. Prof., NTU Graduate Institute of National Development == To protect laborers' rights, I think the government should not cut the total number of holidays. As a result, increasing the days of annual leave may achieve the goal. ==KUO FANG-YU, Minister of Labor== Based on what we know, a lot of employees ask to work overtime on a flexible rest day to earn more money. Minister of Labor Kuo Fang-yu said the amendments do not include increasing maximum overtime hours. Moreover, cutting the seven national holidays is meant to standardize the number of days off in all industries, instead of pandering to employers. As to the annual leave issue, Kuo said he will provide more information for legislators as references. He promised that it will not be a pie in the sky.
