Back in Taiwan, the central government is planning to lift the ban on food imports from nuclear radiation-affected prefectures in Japan. Yet eleven cities and counties are now calling for local measures to go against the decision. Yesterday, Chaiyi City became the first local government in Taiwan to officially ban food from radiation affected Japan. The Executive Yuan is to allow food imports from five nuclear radiation-affected prefectures nearby Japan's Fukushima. KMT council groups called for amending Food Safety Self-Regulations in eleven cities and counties. The amendment aims to ban foods imported from nuclear affected areas. Even the DPP's former Minister of Health Tu Hsing-che spoke out. ==TU HSING-CHE, Chiayi City Mayor== Our city council had such resolution and I will honor it. I will not allow the imported foods from the nuclear affected areas. Chiayi City will be the first city to ban Fukushima products. The New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu doubted whether the lifting of bans on the imports had anything to do with politics. ==ERIC CHU, New Taipei City Mayor== My view is that the government must honestly inform the public. Tell people why do you allow the imports? What were the exchanges? Why do you have to sacrifice public's health for the exchanges? ==LI MING-CHE, KMT Yunlin County Councillor== We absolutely oppose the central government to allow the nuclear polluted foods and products imports to Taiwan. Not to all the supermarkets, retail stores and schools in our Yunlin County. ==Tainan City Council (Nov. 14, 2016)== We are refusing to eat and buy Japanese food and products. The ten public hearings were over, but people continue to oppose the lift. President Tsai asked Premier Lin to have more public hearings for better communications with the public. ==LIN CHUAN Premier== Yes, yes, we will have more, have more public hearings. In a legislative discussion session, the KMT caucus demanded that Taiwan and Japan to agree on mutual judicial assistance before the food imports. The New Power caucus called for a team to go to Japan and do on-site assessments. The incumbent DPP had no legislator present in the discussion session.
