Taiwan denied attendence at Interpol General Assembly / 中方打壓 國際刑警大會我無法出席

The 85th Interpol General Assembly will be held in Indonesia tomorrow. It's been confirmed that Taiwan will not be able to attend, not even as an observer. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed regret over this and said that crime fighting is beyond borders. Transnational crimes have been a serious issue in a globalized world. Taiwan will face challenges in fighting transnational crimes and protecting border security if it is denied access to relevant intelligence. Crime fighting knows no boundaries. However, Taiwan has not been granted access to the upcoming Interpol General Assembly. ==DAVID LEE, Minister of Foreign Affairs== The president and secretary-general of Interpol have informed us in their letters that we have not been extended an invitation to attend the Interpol General Assembly as an observer. (Because of China's suppression?) Apparently, that's a crucial factor. Transnational crimes have become increasingly rampant in a globalized world. Taiwan's national security may be at risk if it is unable to gain access to international intelligence in a timely manner. For instance, this will be a key security issue in next year's Summer Universiade in Taipei, with 12,000 athletes coming from all over the world. ==DAVID LEE, Minister of Foreign Affairs== Taiwan's absence will create a significant gap in the international law enforcement. Thus, we hope that we can find a way to bridge the gap. Some researchers said that the Interpol General Assembly is more of a symbolic event, and there are other avenues to obtain international intelligence. However, Taiwan should still actively seek to participate. ==WANG YUH-WOEI, Prof., Central Police University Dept. of Border Police== We can take a more practical stance and dedicate more efforts to police and immigration administrative work. We need to see security issues as an integral part of our diplomatic efforts. ==WU CHING-CHIN, Dir., Aletheia University Dept. of Law== In the long run, we still need to return to the Interpol. In the short run, though, it is unlikely to happen. The Justice Ministry and the National Police Agency will need to take active steps and sign judicial cooperation agreements with more countries. Since the new administration took office, Taiwan has been excluded from international organization events such as the FAO and ICAO meetings. The DPP administration will need to come up with new ways to overcome these diplomatic challenges.
