A chemistry cram school teacher substituting at a regular high school, recently got himself into trouble, because the questions that he wrote for an exam was too difficult. After receiving complaints from parents, he insisted that the questions weren't too difficult or too simple, they were just right. And he refused to rewrite the questions. And as a result, he has been fired. Here's our report. This was the chemistry mid-term exam taken by a 9th-grade student at the New Taipei Municipal Shuang-Xi High School. Lee Hua, a chemistry teacher, set the exam. After the exam was over, he received complaints from students' parents because they thought the exam was too difficult. The students scored only an average of 16 to 17 out of 100 on the exam, with the highest score being 39, and the lowest, 2. Although Lee was required by students' parents to give a makeup exam, he insisted not to do so. He believed the exam was of moderate difficulty since a lot of the questions were taken from the General Scholastic Ability Test. Why does the school have to give students a makeup exam only because the students' parents asked the school to do so? Is the school ruled by students' parents? Li's enthusiasm for teaching chemistry led him to become a substitute teacher in a high school. He was infuriated by the school's decision because he thinks the school only cares about the students' grades, which will affect the school's university enrollment rate under the current university entrance system. However, school authorities said that they dismissed Li not because of the mid-term exam but because he was unwilling to adjust his teaching method according to the students' level and that he had several conflicts with the students and other teachers. ==PENG CHENG-TSO, Shuang-Xi High School principal== He taught the students in an inactive way. He only told the students to highlight what he said on the text book, and asked them to copy text. He did not make the students practice similar exam questions beforehand, and arbitrarily gave an exam that the students were unable to answer. He said the exam questions were taken from the General Scholastic Ability Test, so it should not be beyond students' capability. However, the students have not practiced such computational problems before, which prevented them from being able to answer. Teachers, parents and school authorities all worked hard to ensure the students' have a good future. It was a pity that they could not reach a consensus on things such as teaching methods which sparked controversy.
