CONTINUING PARTY STRUGGLE OVER HOLIDAY AMENDMENTS|蘇嘉全召集一例一休協商 國民黨拒參與

Besdies taking care of the elderly, another policy focus of the current government is on improving working conditions. But things are a little bit thornier on this front. On October 26th, scuffles erupted between DPP and opposition lawmakers in the Legislative Yuan over the controversial [one rest day one holiday] amendment to the Labor Standards Act. Yesterday, Legislative Yuan Speaker Su Jia-chyuan called a cross-caucus negotiation meeting for conflict resolution, yet the KMT caucus refused to take part. Instead, they occupied the podium of the general assemly in protest of the amendment. On August 27th, the Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee confirmed the minutes on the amendment to the Labor Standards Act. Conflicts broke out among legislators. On August 28th, KMT legislators occupied the Legislative Yuan and requested to re-examine the amendment. ==KMT LEGISLATORS== The meeting was invalid. We refuse to negotiate. To resolve the dispute, Legislative Yuan Speaker Su Jia-chyuan called a cross-caucus negotiation meeting on October 28th. The KMT refused to attend this meeting as it was a pat on their head. ==JOHNNY CHIANG, KMT Caucus Secretary-General== If we attend the negotiation meeting simply because the Speaker lowers his attitude, the meeting would just be a pat on our head. It would be meaningless. We refuse to take part in such negotiations. ==SU JIA-CHYUAN, Legislative Yuan Speaker== We cannot reach a consensus if no one attends the negotiation meeting. If legislators keep on fighting like this, I don't think that's what the people would like to see. To defend the amendment, DPP caucus chief executive Wu Ping-jui even stated that the amendment was a responsible legislation, and that those who opposed it do not have to vote for the DPP in future elections. His statement was criticized as being arrogant. Wu later apologized on Facebook and claimed that this was a mistake caused by his ambiguous remarks. ==WU PING-JUI, DPP Caucus Chief Executive== In a democratic political system, being responsible for the bills that we propose is very important. That's what I wanted to emphasize. Perhaps I did not make myself clear when I made that statement; hence the misinterpretation. For that, I would like to apologize to our supporters. According to DPP caucus whip Ker Chien-ming, it will be difficult to complete the three readings of the amendment by November 8. The Executive Yuan has made a proposal to launch the new law on January 1st next year. That said, workers are still entitled to have three national holidays off by the end of this year.
