The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States held a reception at Twin Oaks in celebration of Taiwan's National Day. Around 3,000 guests attended the event, including the new AIT chairman James Moriarty, who took office just 3 days ago. Moriarty commented on President Tsai Ing-wen's interview with the Wall Street Journal, saying the fact that Tsai spoke about doing her best to maintain the status quo and hoping to talk with China shows her willingness to engage in positive dialogue with China.
==JAMES MORIARTY, AIT Chairman==
I know President Tsai to be a pragmatic, level-headed leader. I'm confident that she will successfully lead Taiwan into the next chapter of its story. I'm equally confident that the United States will continue to serve as a close and trusted partner as Taiwan chooses its future path.
Moriarty said that the US appreciates President Tsai's determination to maintain stable cross-strait relations, and that cross-strait peace will benefit the US in the long term. The US encourages both sides across the Taiwan Strait to be patient, flexible, and creative in resolving differences. On the other hand, China's Taiwan Affairs Office issued a strong statement in response to President Tsai's interview, in which she said Taiwan will not bow down to pressure, stressing China's one-China policy and the 1992 Consensus.

Taiwan is a part of China. Our will to uphold national sovereignty and territory is strong as rock. There is only one China. The political basis of the 1992 Consensus is unshakable. We are firmly opposed to any activities that attempt to promote Taiwan independence or division. No one should ever underestimate the steadfast determination of the 1.3 billion Chinese people.
Moriarty also said that he does not believe that cross-strait relations are in a deadlock, and that strong Taiwan-US relations can benefit cross-strait relations because Taiwan will have more confidence in dealing with China.
