TYPHOON MEGI CAUSES AGRICULTURAL LOSSES OF NT$1.7B|

Due to Typhoon Megi, Prices of vegetables have increased by 60% on average due to decreased supply. For example, prices for lettuce have doubled! As of Sep. 30, prices of some vegetables stabilized, but yam leaves and spring onion prices remain high. After the typhoon was gone, many people rushed to the markets to buy fresh vegetables before they ran out. ==CONSUMER== For vegetables harvested before the typhoon, prices are ok. They might become more expensive in another day of two. ==CONSUMER== (How much have prices gone up?) About 20-30%. Thanks to increased supply, the vegetables' average price has gone down from NT$50.1 to NT$43.1. However, yam leaves and spring onion prices have gone up to over NT$139 and NT$155, respectively. Prices of some vegetables such as cabbage, bok choy, or lettuce have also doubled. Vegetable vendors said that many vegetables have been destroyed by the typhoon. ==VEGETABLE VENDOR== It's been sunny for the past few days, so vegetables became yellow and rotten. This means fewer products. The nets used to protect the produce were destroyed by the typhoon. Yunlin farmers are working to restore their field. According to the Council of Agriculture, Typhoon Megi resulted in an agricultural loss of NT$1.7 billion. Yulin suffered the worst loss of NT$ 400 million, followed by Chiayi, Changhua, and Nantou. The production is cut by 30-40%. ==LU CHUAN-LI, Sec-Gen, Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing== We understand that the loss in vegetable produce is about 30-40%. If the weather is stable, we expect the next batch of produce to be ready for market around mid-Oct. By then vegetable prices will stabilize. ==YUNLIN FARMER== It will be at least a month before another harvest. We need to till the land, plant the seeds, and cultivate the produce. Yunlin farmers said new produce will not be ready for harvest for at least another month. As such, produce supply shortage may be seen in the next month. Vegetable prices will not likely to stabilize until mid-Oct. TRANSLATED BY:CHRISTINA LIU
