In the latest world university rankings published by the Times Higher Education, National Taiwan University's ranking has hit a record low, dropping from 167th to 195th place. NTU said the new Times rankings also looks at school and research funding, which explains the receding position. The latest Times world university rankings have just been announced, with Oxford, Cal tech, and Stanford University claiming the top three places. The National University of Singapore, ranked at 24, is the best in Asia. Among the 26 Taiwan universities that made the list, National Taiwan University received the highest position, 195, which was its lowest since the creation of the Times ranking. ==LIN TA-TE, NTU Secretary-general== Indicators used by the Times rankings and the QS rankings tell us about NTU's strength and weaknesses. We will take position action to improve on our weaknesses. National Taiwan University's ranking fell from 134 in 2013 to 195. NTU said intense international competition and funding are crucial factors. NTU's thesis impact factor ranking went up from 47.3 to 54.5, but its ranking dropped 7 places, which was partly due to the fact that school funding has now been included in the ranking. ==HUANG MU-HSUAN, Prof., Dept. of Library and Information Science NTU== NTU's ranking peaked in 2013 and then started sliding in 2014, which coincided with the government's "Top University Plan" policy. The Times ranking includes several figures from the previous year, so the previous year's performance is directed reflected in the ranking. NTU received a record high 68th place in the QS rankings just recently. However, its position has dropped in both the Shanghai and the Times rankings. Prof. Huang said that the QS rankings mainly looks at prestige, whereas the other two rankings measure factual indicators. Taiwan government's budget for higher education has not increased since 2013, which contributed to NTU's declining performance. TRANSLATED BY:CHRISTINA LIU
