President Tsai Ing-wen's New Southbound Policy certainly presents both opportunities and challenges for Taiwan. At the same conference yesterday, Tsai emphasized the need to resolve conflicts and build networks through dialogue. The director of the American Institute in Taiwan, Kin Moy, who participated in the event as well, emphasized Taiwan's indispensable role in Asia. He also reiterated the United States' continued support for Taiwan to participate more actively, on the international stage.
President Tsai Ing-wen and the director of the American Institute in Taiwan, Kin Moy, attended a conference organized by National Chengchi University's Institute of International Relations. During the conference, Tsai emphasized that Taiwan's location in between Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia provides both advantages and challenges.
==TSAI ING-WEN, R.O.C. President==
These challenges include to consolidate freedom and democracy, to make our economies more competitive and innovative, but at the same time more sustainable and inclusive and to resolve disputes through dialogue. So that peace can prevail.
Tsai said dialogue would be the driving force behind her New Southbound Policy. Her administration plans to extend cooperation from Southeast Asia to South Asia, in terms of medical, educational, technological and agricultural cooperation. She plans to allocate NT$1 billion to this project and promote educational exchanges with ASEAN nations.
==TSAI ING-WEN, R.O.C. President==
We hope to increase the number of Southeast Asian and South Asian students in Taiwan by 20% per year to reach almost 60,000 by 2019.
Moy, meanwhile, emphasized that the U.S. will continue supporting Taiwan's right to participate in the international community.
==KIN MOY, American Institute in Taiwan Director==
Increasing economic prosperity, promoting rule of law, good governance and democracy. The United States admires these contributions and continues to support further international space for Taiwan.
With support from the U.S., all of us look on attentively to see whether Tsai's New Southbound Policy will help Taiwan carve out a greater space for itself on the international stage.
