According to statistics, Taiwan wastes roughly 300 tons of food per day, and a large part of that waste happens between the farm and the grocery store, due to their failure to meet the market standards. In Tainan's Jiangjyun District, where it's famous for asparagus, a group of college student gathered there to find ways to reduce agricultural waste, let's take a look at their result. ==YANG LIN-YING, Asparagus farmer== This will be available to harvest the day after tomorrow. And this one will be ready tomorrow, it'll be over one foot tall Tainan's Jiangjyun District is the first area that successfully grows asparagus in the greenhouse in Taiwan. Farmers here need to begin harvesting at 5:00 every morning and immediately start with grading and packaging. ==YANG LIN-YING, Asparagus farmer== I will cut them from the bottom part, leave about 5.6 inches, and only this part is needed. About one-third of these asparagus go to waste due to their failure to meet retailers' exacting standards. Roughly 100 tons of these asparagus waste are produced here every year, and the local farmer's association has been trying to find ways to reuse and recycle agricultural waste. ==WENG JIA-SHI, Tainan University of Technology student== It's not like those cannot be eaten, and they just go to waste. Since farmers don't have time to manage the waste, they just dump them onto the land as fertilizer, which is kind of unfortunate. A group of students from Tainan University of Technology came to the farm and began their research and interviews during summer vacation. They began by dehydrating the asparagus and turn them into powdered form, and use them to make cookies. They also use the asparagus fiber to make paper crafts. ==WENG JIA-SHI, Tainan University of Technology student== If you use a creative way to rethink about everything, they all have a purpose. These can be used to produce the cultural and creative goods of Jiangjyun district.
