The 2016 Rio Paralympics was brought to a close on September 19th. China has continued its dominance in the medal board with 107 gold medals for 4 consecutive Paralympic Games. At the sitting volleyball court, a player with gigantism led Iran to victory. An orphan, who could not afford a wheelchair in her childhood, has claimed a total of 6 gold medals in the same 3 individual events in both the 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games. Here's our report. China has continued its dominance in the medal board since 2004 with a total of 239 medals including 107 gold. Chinese Taipei took home a silver and a bronze, ranking 68. Iran's 2.46m-tall Morteza Mehrzad attracted the attention at the sitting volleyball event on the last day. Diagnosed with gigantism, Mehrzad normally uses a wheelchair or crutches to get around because a serious pelvis fracture stopped his right leg from growing and makes walking difficult. The 29-year-old player towered over the net and won the gold medal for Iran. The gold medal in the T-42 class long jump was taken by Heinrich Popow of Germany with a jump of 6.70 meters. He also won Gold in 100 meters sprint at the Paralympics 2012 in London. Popow was nine when a doctor diagnosed a tumor in his left calf. The leg amputation forced him to give up on soccer, but he was still able to run and jump. He has encouraged many people with disabilities in hospitals by sharing his success stories. In Women's 800m - T54 Final, Tatyana McFadden from the United States took home the gold. McFadden was born with a congenital disorder that paralyzed her from the waist down. Her birth mother abandoned her in an orphanage that was too poor to afford a wheelchair for her. She spent the first six years of her life walking her hands. Later, she began to receive training for wheelchair racing. This is her third gold medals in the 2016 Paralympics. She also won gold in the 400-, 800-, and 1,500-meter in the 2012 Paralympic games.
