In August, North Korea undertook two nuclear tests. Its nuclear capability has gradually risen, shocking the international community. Analysts say the North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un's complete disregard for international limits was due to his experience of the fate that befell other dictators. Libya's deposed leader Gaddaffi was killed after giving up nuclear weapons, and Iraq's leader Saddam Hussein met a similar end, so he sees hanging on to nuclear weaponry as key to power. South Koreans protested by burning photos of the North Korean leader after the fifth test of nuclear weapons in a decade. The international community also bitterly criticized the nuclear blast. He ignores advice from neighboring countries and the international community and is in love with nuclear weapons to hang onto power. South Korean media describes Kim as being mad about nuclear weapons. An analysis by the BBC posits that this is because in 2011 Libyan dictator Gaddaffi was taken by rebels and was killed. Then in 2003, the power of Iraqi dictator Saddam was overturned by the US and he too was killed. In January this year after the fourth nuclear test, North Korean media said that Gaddaffi and Saddam were deposed from power because they gave up developing nuclear weapons or did not have basic nuclear capability. Thus the North Korean leader believes that nuclear weapons are the key to holding on to power and his personal safety. After the latest nuclear explosion, China called for a return to the six nation talks.
