The Taiwan Railway Union members gathered at the Executive Yuan yesterday in the rain to protest their poor working conditions including long working hours and forced overtime. The union submitted a petition signed by 1,800 union members and demanded that the Executive Yuan to supervise the Taiwan Railway Administration and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications properly to resolve the issues of insufficient staff and unreasonable wage. In response, the Executive Yuan promised to ask the MOTC to take appropriate measures and set up a meeting with the union. The Taiwan Railway Union members gathered in the rain to protest the TRA's mistreatment of workers. The TRA wired the holiday overtime pay to employees in advance in order to force them to work extra shifts during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The TRA also made new staff complete conductor training within just a few days so that they can work as conductors. The union said this is a disregard for passenger safety since new staff are not capable of handling emergency situations. ==CHIN, TRA Conductor== For example, when an incident such as the explosion at the Songshan station a while ago occurred, it requires an experienced conductor to deal with the emergency situation, like calling for help and assisting passengers. The Taiwan Railway Union submitted a petition to the Executive Yuan demanding improvements to their working conditions. They said TRA employees are overworked and this issue needs to be addressed. ==CHOU KAI, Director, Taiwan Railway Union== We were never given the option to take a day off during public holidays. We also never got our days off back afterwards. ==WANG CHIEH, President, Taiwan Railway Union== First, they need to pay us in full for our overtime or night shifts. We understand that hiring new staff takes time, but we hope the TRA can adjust the train schedules to make sure employees get enough rest. Taiwan Railways Administration Deputy Chief Lu Chieh-Shen responded in a press lease that the TRA is working to hire more staff and resolve the overtime pay and wage issues. The TRA will also start reviewing the train schedules on Sep. 10. The union warned that more railway staff will refuse to work overtime during the Mid-Autumn Festival if the TRA does not propose a solution to these issues by Sep. 12th.
