Minimum wage raises by 5% applying to foreigh workers / 基本工資調漲5% 明年起漲至21009元　　　　　　　　　　

The Labor Ministry's basic wage review committee convened on September 8th. After a 5-hour meeting, a final decision was made to hike the basic monthly wage by 5% to NT$21,009. Meanwhile, the minimum hourly wage will be raised gradually to NT$126 in October, and then to NT$133 next January. The proposal will be submitted to the Executive Yuan for approval and will apply to foreign workers, too. Labor activists clashed with the police. Labor groups are determined to let their voice be heard because they believe that the minimum wage should be NT$26,000 per month or NT$160 per hour based on the basic standard of living and age dependency ratio in Taiwan. ==CHANG TSUNG-KUN, Higher Ed. Youth Union== Our calculation shows that there is an NT$8,000 gap. Any figures under NT$28,000 per month or NT$177 would be unacceptable. ==CHUANG CHUEH-AN, Taiwan Confederation of Trade Unions== The consensus we reached is a minimum wage of NT$26,000 per month or NT$164 per hour. Labor organizations hope the minimum wage review committee can come up with a fair solution for workers. ==TSENG PAO-HSIANG, President, General Association of Industrial Parks== We need to continue our communication in different forms so that we can come up with a win-win solution for both the labor and the employers. Labor representatives boycotted the last meeting held on July 26th. This time, 2 labor representatives were present. The meeting lasted 5 hours and the decision was finally made to raise the basic monthly wage by 5% to NT$21,009. The minimum hourly wage will be raised gradually from NT$120 to NT$126, and finally NT$133. ==KUO FANG-YU, Labor Minister== The minimum hourly wage will be raised from NT$120 to NT$126 and will take effect on Oct. 1st. Starting in 2017, the minimum hourly wage will be raised from NT$126 to NT$133, and the basic monthly wage will be adjusted from NT$20,008 to NT21,009. Labor Minister Kuo Fang-Yu said an estimated 1.6 million workers will be benefit from the basic monthly wage raise, and over 390,000 workers will enjoy a higher hourly wage. The proposal will be implemented on Jan. 1st, 2017 the soonest.
