On September 5, 40 self-help associations protested at the Presidential office. They asked the Tsai administration to immediately halt controversial demolition works and respond to their requests before September 25. Yet The Executive Yuan does not consider protesting an effective way to deal with the issues. On September 5, self-help associations across Taiwan protested at the Presidential Office. They asked the new government to immediately halt controversial demolition's. Among them, residents who live adjacent to the Kaohsiung Fruit and Vegetable Market accused Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chu of making them homeless. ==WU FU-HSIUNG, self-help association head== She torn down the housing complex on September 1. We two elders do not have anywhere to live. No one was willing to let us rent their houses. Now we can only go live with my 5 children in a tiny place. ==LIN YEN-TUNG, Taiwan Association for Human Rights== It does not matter whether the residents own the property or not. All these evictions were carried out without any concern for public welfare. The government made people leave their houses, victimized them, and even asked them to pay for this themselves. Protesters felt helpless as they watched their houses being torn down. They said the government continued to work on controversial building plans without considering their rights to habitation. Therefore, they believe that they had no choice but to protest over and over again to raise the government and the public's awareness. ==ALEX TUNG, Executive Yuan spokesperson== Protesting is a way to voice opinions, and the government respects it. However, it may not be the most effective way to express ideas. The government hopes that these problems can be rationally discussed through various communication channels. Self-help associations countered that they have tried all possible legal and administrative methods, and that they never received a kind response. They said that protesting is their last solution and they will fight to the end. They called for the new government to make thorough reviews over compulsory land purchase policy, and respond to their requests before September 25.
