Vietnamese immigrants and workers attended the Buddhist rituals of the Ullambana Festival over the weekend to commemorate their lost friends and relatives. According to support organizations for Vienamese workers, over 50 workers from Vietnam have died in Taiwan this year. These deaths were mostly caused by work related accidents and stress.
Monks chanted in the Vietnamese Buddhist rituals of the Ullambana Festival, paying tribute to the deceased Vietnamese workers and immigrants.
The names, age, and cause of death of the deceased were written on paper for the ritual. According to support organizations for Vienamese workers, over 50 workers from Vietnam have died in Taiwan from January to July this year. Over half of them died in sleep, and less than half the deaths were due to occupational accidents. Overall, these deaths are caused by long working hours, high stress, and lack of training.

There are fewer cases workplace injuries due to equipment. Many workers just die in their sleep. They are mostly men.

I didn't read Chinese when I first came here. It is very important to be able to read. I sometimes work 14 or 15 hours a day.
Chen is from Vietnam and has been working in a Taiwan for over a year. He does not speak Chinese. For many young workers like him who are trying to making a living, their greatest fear is accidents at the factory.

I had a car accident. It was dangerous. I was afraid. I had to be hospitalized.
There are around 600,000 migrant workers in Taiwan providing in-home services and working in various industries. Migrant workers have become an important part of the Taiwan labor force. However, currently only industrial migrant workers are protected by the Standard Labor Act. While the labor law sets limits on work hours, less overtime work also means less pay, which only adds to their mental stress. Half of the deaths of migrant workers are due to workplace accidents, and the other half are sudden deaths.
