GREEN ROOFS HELP LOWER TEMPERATURES|綠屋頂.立體綠化 有效減緩熱島效應

This June and July, there have been records set in Taipei for high temperatures. As a subtropical to tropical island, cities in Taiwan all experience higher temperatures. So-called green roofs or 3D greening can reduce temperatures of the roof surface and the surrounding air. Both Taipei and Kaohsiung cities have new regulations for roofs to help lower temperatures. Rooftops provide a different view of the city. A view from the air shows corrugated iron roofs everywhere on rooftops. From infrared thermal imaging it can be seen that in the summer roof temperatures go up to fifty or sixty degrees. According to research, green roofs can lower temperatures by over 20 degrees. This can reduce indoor temperatures by 3-5 degrees. Surrounding temperatures will also fall. In recent years, many public buildings and schools have built green roofs, as a carbon reduction strategy. ==FU XU-XUN Yuanpei University Admin. Manager== It has huge benefits in term of the amount of air conditioning that we use, so we feel its really worth investing in ==HUANG YU-CHUNG Huxing Kongzhong Farm== Sweet potato leaves, ginger, leeks, these are nearly all ready nearly mature New Taipei City and Kaohsiung City were the first counties to promote green roofs. In 2011 New Taipei City required that new buildings of over 5,000 square meters, must create green roofs or set up solar panels. In 2011, Kaohsiung City Government also adopted autonomous regulations for new buildings over 50 meters to create green roofs over at least half the area. To encourage old buildings to create green roofs, it has provided up to NT$80 million in funding. ==HUANG ZHI-MING Kaohsiung City Govt. Public Works Bur. Chief Enginr.== Currently in Kaohsiung we have over 200,000 square meters and many hundreds of buildings that already have green roofs and our government buildings such as our Public Works Bureau, also has a green roof. In June this year, Taipei City caught up with New Taipei and Kaohsiung and required new buildings to green their roofs. ==KAO CHEN-YUAN Commissioner, Taipei City Govt. Dept of Economic Devlpmnt.== New buildings must have over 50 percent of their area planted with vegetation for a green roof as a norm in their technical specifications. As the climate becomes more extreme, the city will face waves of heat, wave and rain. Buildings that are energy wasters and polluters can be transformed starting from their roofs. This is not only relaxing and beautiful for inhabitants, it is also a necessary strategy for urban survival. Local government has taken a positive step. Next, it is up to central government to put forward a more proactive strategy to bring cities relief from the heat.
