Typhoon Nepartak damaged many structures and properties in Taitung. Some houses were badly damaged but not to the extent where they would be eligible for compensation from the government. Their owners don't have the means to undertake repair themselves. However, some volunteers went to Taitung to help out with the rebuilding effort, moving residents with their kindness.
Kang Guo-yi is an independent volunteer who lives in Changhua and grows strawberries for a living. Although he has an artificial joint from an old injury, he still enjoys working as a volunteer and just two days after Typhoon Nepartak, he set off for Taitung to help out. He sought out those who couldn't repair their homes themselves and offered to help out. He used materials and tools donated by charities and helped to re-build homes.

I borrowed some tools from locals here, of course I have to give them back! I'm here to help!
Wang Tien-hung lives in Taipei and repairs motors scooters for a living. After the typhoon he took a few days off work and went to Chiben's Jianhe community. Here he helped to collect up corrugated iron sheets bent by the wind. There are several volunteers from all over Taiwan who have come to Taitung to help to re-build homes in the disaster area.

Some people say you are amateurs! It's just a phrase, we admit it and just go on.
==WANG TIEN-HUNG independent volunteer==
Well, not complete amateurs, we hope to do our best, we wanted to come here and make things better.

I'm so grateful to them, they keep on working until 7 in the evening.
These independent volunteers may not be professional builders, but they do have experience and enthusiasm. So far, they have helped 10 households who were ineligible for compensation to rebuild. There are still many more who need help. Although there are not enough volunteers, they say they will stay until all the structures that need repairs are finished.
