More Voters Don't Support Chen than Do
According to the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation's latest public opinion poll, 37.6 percent of respondents support Chen Shih-chung resigning to run for Taipei City mayor while 40.2 percent don't. New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih, meanwhile, saw his approval rating take a hit due to the Enen case. Meanwhile, The foundation also polled the public on Taoyuan mayoral candidate Lin Chih-chien, who is facing with a thesis plagiarism scandal.
Chen Shih-chung resigned as the head of the Central Epidemic Command Center, a post he'd held for 911 days, to run for Taipei City mayor. According to the latest Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation public opinion poll, 37.6 percent of respondents support his decision and 40.2 percent don't. In Taipei, 49 percent of respondents did not support Chen's decision while 32 percent did.
Su Huan-chih, Former Tainan County Mayor: “Nominating Chen Shih-chung is a risky move, so why did they do that? It's because it's a three-way race and his chances of winning are higher in a split vote, especially when he has so much support from the party.”
The foundation has conducted seven polls since last May. Since last July, New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih's approval rating has fallen from 50.3 percent -- the highest among the six special municipalities -- to 28.4 percent. Hou's approval rating fell 6.8 percentage points in the past month alone due to the Enen case.
Michael You, Chair, Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation: “We've never seen this happen before. Everyone knows 6.8 percentage points is not small. One percentage point equates to 195,000 people.”
The foundation also polled the public on Lin Chih-chien, who is facing with a thesis plagiarism scandal. While younger respondents had a stronger reaction to the scandal, 48.2 percent of respondents said wasn't a big deal and only 36.4 percent said it was. Among Taoyuan residents, 53 percent of respondents in Taoyuan felt it wasn't a big deal and 33 percent felt it was.
