The Yushan Forum opened on Oct. 8. President Tsai Ing-wen said Taiwan wants to peacefully coexist with its neighbors while former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott reaffirmed his support for Taiwan's membership in the CPTPP.
The 5th Yushan Forum opened on the 8th. This year's theme is "Resetting Priorities of Progress and Resilience." President Tsai Ing-wen and former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott gave the opening remarks. Tsai said Taiwan is not pursuing military confrontation and it wants to peacefully coexist with its neighbors.
Tsai Ing-wen, ROC President:"Taiwan does not seek military confrontation. It hopes for a peaceful, stable, predictable and mutually beneficial coexistence with its neighbors."
Tsai also said Taiwan is committed to regional participation and cooperation to prevent military conflict in the East Sea, South China Sea, and Taiwan Strait. Abbott, meanwhile, criticized Beijing's "bullying" and said the US would not take Beijing's behavior lying down. Abbott also said Australia should join its democratic partners in supporting Taiwan.
Tony Abbott, Former Australian Prime Minister:"That's why Taiwan's friends are so important now, to stress that Taiwan's future should be decided by its own people and to let Beijing know that any attempt at coercion would have incalculable consequences."
Abbott also reaffirmed his support for Taiwan's membership in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership regardless of how China's membership application goes. The head of the Japan-ROC Diet Members' Consultative Council also expressed support for Taiwan joining the CPTPP.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent a letter of congratulation to the forum, calling Taiwan an important partner and friend. Abe also said Taiwan can make many contributions to freedom in the Indo-Pacific.
第5屆「玉山論壇」8日舉行,主題為「以韌實力重啟共同進步的優先議程」,總統蔡英文,澳洲前總理艾伯特出席開幕致詞,其中台海問題更是關切焦點,蔡總統強調台灣不尋求軍事對抗,希望與"鄰居"和平共存。
總統 蔡英文表示:「台灣不尋求軍事對抗,希望在和平穩定可預測,而且互惠的原則下,與鄰居共存。」
蔡總統指出台灣致力與區域參與者合作,防止東海、南海及台灣海峽爆發軍事衝突,與近日在"外交事務"雙月刊所寫的專文內容大致相同,艾伯特也批評北京霸凌行徑,相信美國不會坐視不管北京的作為,而澳洲也應該和民主夥伴一致,支持台灣。
澳洲前總理 艾伯特表示:「這就是為什麼台灣的朋友,現在如此重要。台灣的未來,應該由自己的人民決定。並讓北京知道,任何脅迫企圖,都會帶來無法估算的後果。」
艾伯特也重申支持台灣加入CPTPP,雖然中國也想加入,但其掠奪式的經濟行為,難以成功,日本「日華議員懇談會」會長古屋圭司,同樣提到支持台灣加入CPTPP。
日華議員懇談會長 古屋圭司表示:「台日共享(民主法治)普世價值,我們希望這個重要的合作夥伴,能盡快加入CPTPP。」
前日本首相安倍晉三雖沒有親自與會,特別致上賀函,表達對台灣和論壇活動的支持與祝福。安倍強調,台灣是與日本共享價值的夥伴也是重要的朋友,且台灣有實力和意願,將能為自由開放的印太做出許多貢獻。
