More than 200 Taiwanese citizens in Wuhan returned to Taiwan on the night of Feb. 3 on a charter flight. However, there have been speculation about how the passenger list had been drawn up. KMT Central Committee member Vincent Hsu, who represents a support group for Taiwanese in Wuhan, was caught in the middle of this scandal.
Recently, a Taiwanese businessperson who returned to Taiwan from China was diagnosed with the 2019 novel coronavirus infection. The charter flights to Taiwan has since been mired in controversy. There have been rumors some on this charter flight were not among those listed to be on the plane, and some are not even Taiwanese citizens. Vincent Hsu, who serves as the head of the association in charge of helping Taiwanese in China return to Taiwan, recently spoke about the second charter flights being late. His statement has drawn criticism from the Mainland Affairs Council and the opposition Kuomintang.
The road back home is very difficult. But no matter how hard it is, many are happy to have come back to Taiwan.
Hsu held two press conferences in the last two days, calling people to not politicize his effort. On the other hand, some have revealed Hsu wears many hats. Other than serving as the head of Taipei Parents Association, a member of the KMT's central committee, a consultant for Huang Fuxing party branch; he also holds positions in the political consultative of Beijing and Suzhou in China, as well as in the China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification and as the executive director in the China Overseas Friendship Association for Henan and Yunnan provinces. After Hsu gave his statements, the Kuomintang has said that it has asked Hsu to rein in his speech or face party disciplinary actions.
There's been rumors that he acted on his own and interfered with the selection of people who could board the charter flights. These behaviors cannot be tolerated by the KMT. Therefore, he must take responsibility for his action and face criticism from society.
Hsu has not responded to inquiries by phone, but he said in a recent Facebook post that he never arranged to have his own family members to get on the charter flight back to Taiwan. He also stresses that he is only acting as the head of the Taipei Parents Association, and that his action has nothing to do with any other organization. On the other hand, officials from China's Taiwan Affairs office in Hubei province, where the outbreak is centered, have called on Taiwan to help assist Taiwanese businesspeople return home.
