Experts warn that several popular, mid-priced smart speakers contain core parts or technology produced in China, and these devices may transmit information on users to cloud databases for analysis, resulting in privacy and data breach issues.
Many people love using smart speakers, because they can answers to their questions without the need to type anything and control other smart appliances. More and more of these products are flooding into the market, where they have been very well-received.
You can control your appliances even when you're outside. I think this is the biggest advantage that they have.
However, experts remind the public to be careful when using these devices. Scholars say the majority of available smart speakers are produced by Chinese brands. Although there are some Taiwanese brands as well, the overwhelming majority have core components or technology from China. These devices may therefore be collecting and transmitting user information to cloud databases, resulting in information security issues and affecting all other connected devices if a hacking incident occurs.
Smart speakers collect the voice data of users for identification, and they will gradually collect data on the private behavior of users. The Chinese government issued a decree requesting companies to gather information for the government.
Scholars say users should limit the information they provide to smart appliances, especially information on finances, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information. This will reduce their chances of becoming victims of data breaches.
