29-Year Old Athlete Takes Over as Head of Taoyuan Sports Bureau|最年輕體育主管 莊佳佳掌桃園體育局


Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan announced that former Taekwondo athlete Chung Chia-Chia will serve as the head of Taoyuan City Department of Sports, starting on January 31. This makes Chuang the youngest head of a municipal sports bureau. She said that the biggest challenge will be the upcoming National Games, which will be held in Taoyuan. She said she will no longer consider coming out of retirement, and will try to seek more benefit for athletes as the new head of sports department.


Standing alongside Taoyuan City Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan and dressed in black pant suit, former Taekwondo athlete Chuang Chia-chia has a new job: she will take over as the new head of Taoyuan City Department of Sports. She said her biggest challenge will be the upcoming National Games in October, which will be held in Taoyuan City.

I am hoping to provide more planning and care for the athletes in Taoyuan. I also want to help foster more athletes and promote sports among all members of public.

Chuang is turning 30 years old in May. She's currently studying for a doctor's degree in the National Taiwan Normal University. She has represented Taiwan in many international competitions. Chuang won a gold medal in the 2011 College Student Games, and the 2015 World Taekwondo Championships. She won a Bronze in the 2014 Asian Games and a fifth place in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Approaching retirement, Chuang has taken over as the new head of the Taoyuan City Department of Sports. This makes her the youngest municipal sports department head in Taiwan. Chuang said that, when she first received the message from the mayor, she thought it was a fraud message.

It was hard to believe at first. The position of head of sports department is a heavy task for me.

(Chuang) has expertise and enthusiasm in sports. She an exemplary figure for younger athletes.

After considering the offer for a week, Chuang decided to take the position and end her athletic career. She said she will focus on the tasks at hand and seek more benefits for the athletes in Taoyuan as a department head.
