Taichung Stripped of 2019 Youth Game Hosting Rights|中國打壓我主辦東亞青運 朝野同聲譴責

Taichung has lost the right to host the 2019 East Asian Youth Games, reportedly due to pressure from China, which is unhappy about a referendum proposal to rename Taiwan's national sports team from "Chinese Taipei" to "Taiwan". President Tsai Ing-wen issued a statement, calling China's interference "barbaric" and said the government will work on overturning the decision until the very end.

On the 24th, the East Asian Olympic Committee revoked Taichung's right to host the 2019 East Asian Youth Games. Committee Chair Liu Peng said the decision was made because Taiwan is challenging the Olympic model with its attempt to change the name it competes under. On the 25th, President Tsai Ing-wen blasted China while receiving foreign visitors. She said China was arrogant and she would fully support the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee and Taichung City's fight to reapply for the hosting rights "to the end."

I must reaffirm once again that Taiwan's position is -- China's suppression will not change our commitment to becoming part of the global community. Taiwan is willing and capable of maintaining regional and peace and stability.

Former track athlete Chi Cheng, an advocate of the "name rectification" referendum, said Taiwan's fight to compete under a new name would never stop.
In response to Tsai's comments, the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee said it will work with Taichung City to draft a letter of protest to the East Asian Olympic Committee and inform the committee of how much preparation work has already taken place. It hopes this will be enough to get the decision overturned.

We will write a letter with Taichung to the EAOC's headquarters to express our severe protest and ask for the decision to be reconsidered. We will also send a report on the preparations Taichung has already made to the EAOC.

China is questioning our - that we are not following the Olympic Committee model. We will edit relevant data and we will (prove) that the Olympic model established in 1981 -- that we have followed this model in the 37 years since.

The referendum has already cleared the first stage and organizers must collect 280,000 signatures by the end of August to clear the second stage. So far, just 72,000 people have signed. Organizers hope this latest development will spur support for the referendum.
