Finland is believed to be the happiest country on the planet as it topped the world Happiness Report compiled by the United Nations. The top five places all went to northern European countries. Taiwan, meanwhile, placed 26th, the highest in East Asia. It is still snowing in Helsinki in March and families play happily in the snow. Finland topped this year's World Happiness Report as the world's happiest country. Finland provides citizens with everything we need. Daycare centers are nearby and there are many parks. The U.N. Sustainable Development Solutions Network ranked 156 countries on factors including average life expectancy, standard of living and level of social freedom. It also surveyed the happiness of immigrants in 117 countries for the first time this year. The top five places all went to northern European countries. The U.N. published its first happiness rankings in 2012 and Nordic nations have had a tight grasp on the top places since. The top reason cited is confidence in public policy. People have confidence in government. The social support systems, which are under stress in other places, are holding strong in Scandinavia. The U.S. slid from 14th to 18th this year. The report noted a prevailing lack of confidence in the government in the U.S., where social injustice and violence have turned into a social crisis. Taiwan, meanwhile, placed 26th, which was the highest in East Asia. War-torn African nations including Burundi, Central African Republic and South Sudan filled out the bottom of the list. Yemen was also one of the unhappiest countries in the world due to the ongoing civil war, cholera outbreak and widespread famine.
