Major general, Hsieh Chia-kang, who was caught up in a Chinese spying case, has been released on a NT$100,000 bail and banned from leaving the country. Academics worry that the theft of Taiwan's military secrets might have repercussions on Taiwan-US military cooperation. Some also call the case sensitive in its timing and possibly a response to Beijing's increasing diplomatic hostility.
Former Commander Hsieh Chia-kang of the Air Defense Missile Command was seen quietly leaving the prosecutor's office. He was questioned regarding his involvement in a spying case that may have leaked key military intelligence, including information on Taiwan's Patriot missiles. He was granted bail at NT$100,000 and banned from leaving the country, drawing public attention. Officials would not comment directly on whether this will affect Taiwan-US military cooperation.

We will cooperate with the investigation in compliance with the law. We will work with the prosecution on this. The military has always had (anti-spying measures). This was actually discovered by our anti-spying personnel.

As can be imagined, the US is very concerned about this affair and they will know about the evidence we have collected, I mean the investigators. We will ask the investigators to give relevant information the US.
The US is deeply concerned about Taiwan military leaks, academics say, because they are worried that the technology of the weapons they sold to Taiwan will be stolen by Chinese spies. This will affect not only US-Taiwan relations but also the US-China power struggle.
==FAN SHIH-PING Professor, NTNU Graduate Institute of Political Science==
If F-35 planes are sold to Taiwan as rumored, then information regarding its manufacture will fall into Chinese hands. That is the first worry. Second, they will want Taiwan to strengthen counter-espionage efforts in the military.
A spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office said it does not know the reason for what it called Taiwan's sensationalization of the Chinese spy issue. Fan Shih-ping called the timing for divulging the spy case "sensitive" in the wake of a separate spying case involving a university student as well as Taiwan's snub from the upcoming World Health Assembly. Some say that this is the Tsai government's way of showing its defiance of Beijing.
