The first debate in the contentious race for the KMT chairpersonship was held on the afternoon of May 10th. Candidate Hao Lung-bin invited the other candidates to sign a pledge of unity. Most other candidates supported this, but Wu Den-yih made a pointed response, saying that he has never betrayed the KMT. The debate started with a focus on cross-Strait issues, and candidate Pan Wei-kang called on President Tsai Ing-wen to recognize the so-called 92 consensus on the anniversary of her inauguration on May 20 to repair cross-Strait ties. The candidates all said that the cross-Strait issue is the KMT's trump card. Why did he not question my loyalty back then (when I ran for Taipei mayor)? ==HAN KUO-YU KMT Chair Candidate== When I was in high school, my first crushes were Brigitte Lin and Joan Lin. Would they have made good presidential candidates? I'm being ironic, of course. The KMT chairpersonship is an immense challenge. No chair would want to support a weak candidate. Han Kuo-yu sarcastically challenged Hau's idea of running Foxconn chairman Terry Gou as a presidential candidate, saying that the KMT needs to be able to stand for itself. Regarding the issue of how to integrate the party's deep-blue and local factions, candidates were divided and sometimes heated in debate. But all six candidates said that they wanted to unify the KMT and understand the ideas of their opponents through the debate.
