Guangdong's Wukan Village was once hailed as a model for democracy in Chinese rural villages, yet in June, its democratically elected Communist Party Secretary Lin Zuluan was sentenced to three years in prison for corruption charges. In recent months, his forced confession on the media has driven villagers to the streets to protest. On the early morning of September 13th, riot police stormed the village. They arrested 13 people for leading the protests and put a bounty on 5 others. As large teams of riot police moved in on Wukan Village on the 13th, rubber bullets and tear gas canisters were fired against the villagers. After 13 people were arrested, tension further escalated as angry protesters began to lob rocks and empty containers at the police. A footage taken by a local resident shows the village shrouded in tear gas, and the crackling of weapons being fired and detonated could be heard. Many villagers sustained open rubber bullet wounds on their bodies. ==MS. WU, Villager== The Police are coming for us, they've taken 20 today. Yesterday they took ten. Five years ago, corruption charges against the government for illegally selling farmlands to businesses led to village-wide demonstrations at Wukan. Not long after, the authorities caved in and granted the villagers a democratic election, where Lin Zuluan, who led the protests against government corruption, was elected as widely expected. Yet things took a downturn in June when Lin was sentenced to 3 years in prison by the government for corruption charges and forced to make a public confession, stoking anger among people in Wukan. Since June, people have refused to work, stopped running businesses and taken their anger to the streets. On the early morning of September 13th, teams of riot police eventually stormed the village, arresting 13 people and putting a bounty of RMB$10,000 each on 5 others.
