A 65-year-old Russian flying in an air balloon came back to Earth safely in the Australian outback on July 23, after setting a new world record by flying solo around the world nonstop in 11 days. Fedor Konyukhov landed 160 kilometers east of where he started his journey on July 12. Crews in six helicopters followed the balloon from Northam inland to help it land at a spot near Bonnie Rock in Western Australia. The 56 metre tall helium and hot-air balloon returned to Australia directly over the west coast city of Perth. In 2002 an American businessman also started a flight from Northam in a hot air balloon and set a record of 13 days and eight hours for a 33,000-kilometer journey. Konyukhov, who is a Russian Orthodox priest, took a longer route and spent 11 days and 6 hours to complete the circumnavigation. TRANSLATED BY:CLARE LEAR
