The China-U.S. trade war continues to burn, and some Taiwanese businesspersons are thinking about returning to Taiwan. In response to the acceleration of the return of Cross-Strait Taiwanese businesspersons, Science and Technology Minister Chen Liang-gee stressed that science parks have now set up dedicated windows to receive applications, and that there are currently 140 hectares of land at science parks ready to be used.
With the China-U.S. trade war heating up, lawmakers want to know how prepared the government is for Taiwanese businesses returning to the island and whether China will make the process difficult. Science and Technology Minister Chen Liang-gee says the industry is dynamic and the trade war is short-term, but three Taiwanese companies are already in the process of taking up tenancy at major science parks.
Minister, how many of the 20 companies applying to move into science parks meet qualifications? Currently, three applications have been approved and they are in the process of building plants. There are 20 others that are under review.
Taiwanese businesses that are exiting the Chinese market can turn to our agencies if they have concrete needs. We have hired some experts and scholars to give them professional guidance.
A Ministry of Finance official, meanwhile, told lawmakers new tax incentives have already been legislated to draw Taiwanese companies back to Taiwan.
Do we have ways to attract them? Important tax incentives aimed at drawing our Taiwanese businesses back to Taiwan were included in the new tax system that was promulgated this past February. In the future, they will see their taxes go way down compared to the past.
According to Chen, there are still 140 hectares of immediately useable land available at science parks and space is not a problem. He also said over 20 Taiwanese companies, primarily in the telecommunications and optoelectronics sectors, are currently applying for tenancy and the parks have set up dedicated teams to process applications and offer customized services.
