The three-day holiday of the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival is around the corner. In order to manage the heavy traffic on Freeway No. 5, the Ministry of Transportation has launched for the first time to allow drivers to use the highway with no toll on the day before and after the holiday period. As for the weather, a cold front will arrive in Taiwan on Sunday, and temperatures across northern Taiwan could drop to 24 degrees Celsius.
Due to the Pacific anticyclone, the temperatures during early autumn remain high. The weathers in most regions in Taiwan have been stable, ranging from sunny to cloudy. However, starting on Sunday, the temperature will begin to drop, and northern Taiwan will see temperatures as low as 24 degrees Celsius.
The approaching cold front will gradually increase the chances of raining in eastern and northern Taiwan starting on Sunday. Therefore, the public should beware of the changing weather conditions during the Mid-Autumn Festival holidays.
The video footage from the air quality monitoring station in Taipei City's Shilin District shows grey sky in the last 24 hours. The stable weather and slow wind speed have not been conducive to air dispersion. The air quality in most of the western regions of Taiwan on September 21 has shown orange warnings, which means it is not healthy for those who are sensitive to air quality change
The southeast wind around Taiwan is weak in intensity. In western Taiwan, the local conditions have not been conducive to air dispersion, and residents in northern regions must be aware of the accumulation of air pollutants.
The Mid-Autumn Festival holiday starts on September 22. The Freeway No. 5 will be toll-free for the day before and after the three-day vacation, which means that from 6am to 3pm on September 21 and 25, the highway will be free for all road users.
The traffic on Freeway No. 3 and 5 has been managed well so far, it hasn't been affected (by the upcoming holidays). The traffic on Friday, the day before the three-day holidays, is not that different from an average Friday.
The Freeway Bureau said that they will need to wait until after the holidays to see whether the toll-free measures actually helped with easing congestion on the highway or not.
