The Dengue fever keeps spreading in Taiwan, as the first case of Dengue infection in two years was found in Taichung City, and the ongoing epidemic in New Taipei has spread further. On the other hand, the deserted Hsing Lin hospital in Tainan City has come to the public's attention since many worry that the water accumulated in the hospital could provide breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Once listed among the top ten haunted houses by Taiwan's internet users, the Hsing Lin Hospital is in the public's attention in the middle of the ghost month. The religious scripture on the door frame only adds to the horror atmosphere of the building. Despite their initial hesitation, officials from Tainan Public Health Bureau has to make their way inside to eradicate possible sources of dengue virus.
(You won't be afraid?) At least I won't think too much in the middle of the day.
We must periodically inspect all spots where water could accumulate, such as empty houses, empty areas, and basements. We might be a little bit scared, and we hope to come and inspect as a team.
Hsing Lin Hospital was once ran by three doctors. There have long been inquiries on purchasing the property, however the parties involved never reached an agreement. The hospital was built in 1975, and closed its doors on 1993, which means it has been unoccupied for 25 years. Some members of the public have been exploring the place and it was once listed among the top ten haunted houses in Taiwan. In the past, there have been rumors that entering the house had led to physical discomfort among inspectors. Most believe that the discomfort was caused by psychological issues. Nonetheless, inspecting the deserted hospital in the middle of ghost month does prove to be spooky for some.
There are people who come to explore this place every year, just like members from the media. Most of them are youngsters, and there really isn't anything special inside.
The health officials mostly focus on the basement, where water could accumulate. The basement happens to be the hospital's morgue in the past. Despite several spots where water has accumulated, the inspectors did not find any mosquito larva. On the other hand, the inspectors found larva in the outdoor garden, where grass has grown rampantly. The inspectors have applied chemicals to contain the situation. The city's health bureau said that owners of properties where mosquito larva are found will be subject to fines between NT$ 3,000 to 15,000, effectively immediately.
