Paraguayan President-elect Mario Abdo Benitez had dinner with President Tsai Ing-wen at his residence the evening before his inauguration. The two leaders spoke for one hour, and reached a consensus to upgrade bilateral cooperation on three pillars.
The first is strengthening bilateral trade transactions. The second is bringing Taiwanese investment to Paraguay. The third is basic infrastructure.
Republic of China Ambassador to Paraguay Diego Chou and Abdo Benitez' foreign affairs advisor Hugo Saguier spoke with the media about the bilateral meeting. According to Chou, Abdo Benitez said he will strengthen the bilateral relationship after taking office.
President Abdo Benitez made a point of saying that one of the most important factors in the relationship between the Republic of China and Paraguay is that both countries are democracies, respect freedom and respect human rights. The sharing of these basic values is an important reason why the two countries have maintained diplomatic ties and close relations.
Abdo Benitez also accepted Tsai's invitation to visit Taiwan in October for talks and the National Day of the Republic of China celebrations.
