Taiwan has been hit by hot weather recently, as have Asian nations South Korea and Japan. The temperature in South Korea's capital city, Seoul, hit 39.6 degrees Celsius on Aug. 1, the highest temperature recorded in Seoul in 111 years. The temperature in Hongcheon County, meanwhile, was recorded at 41 degrees Celsius. In Japan's Tokyo, the temperature hit 35 degrees Celsius on Aug. 1.
Temperatures are soaring across Northeast Asia. In Seoul, temperatures hit 39.6 and 30.3 degrees Celsius, respectively, on the morning and evening of the 1st. Both were the highest temperature recorded since 1907. It has been blistering hot in Seoul for 12 days already, but the Korea Meteorological Administration expects temperatures to remain high for at least several more days.
It's really terrible. I can't even walk outside during the day if I don't have a fan. I like summer, but I can't deal with heat like this.
Residents are only going outside when they have to and many are heading to the beach to cool down. Firefighters are also spraying water on the street. North of Seoul, temperatures hit a record 41 degrees in Hongcheon County. Daytime temperatures in landlocked parts of Seoul are expected to remain above 38 degrees for several more days, which is 4-7 degrees higher than previous years. Over in Japan, temperatures climbed to 35 degrees in Tokyo on the 1st. According to reports, the heat killed 96 people in central Tokyo last month and sent hundreds to the emergency room. The number of fatalities is four times higher than last year and many tourists are feeling unwell.
It's more hot because, like, the weather, like, the hot, it's more wet, and then you feel, like, more uncomfortable.
Temperatures hit 41.1 degrees in Saitama Prefecture's Kumagaya on July 23, a national record. Rickshaw drivers spent the day guzzling water to stay hydrated. With temperatures rising every year, measures for dealing with the heat will be one of the focuses of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
