The Changchun Changsheng Biotechnology Company in China was recently found to have produced counterfeit vaccines. The issue has drawn heavy backlash from parents. Chinese President Xi Jinping, who's currently on a visit to Africa, has demanded the government to get to the bottom of the case, and to publish results in real time.
The Changchun Changsheng Biotechnology Company in China was recently found to have produced counterfeit rabies vaccines. There have also been rumors that another batch of the company's multipurpose vaccines for pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus has quality issues as well. The issue is getting increased attention from the public. Chinese President Xi Jinping, who's currently on a visit to Africa, has heavily criticized those at fault.
The incident has revealed the lack of moral in the company's action, which is truly astounding. The government agency must take the matter seriously and engage in thorough investigation. They must get to the bottom of things and find the people responsible.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang issued a statement for the incident, saying that the company's action is clearly below what can be tolerated and that the government must report the issue clearly to members of the public, as well as to find those responsible. The premier has demanded the State Council to set up a special team to investigate the production process of the vaccines.
The police has brought in the CEO of Changchun Changsheng Biotechnology Company, as well as four other high level officials for investigation. So far, it's been found that around 250,000 of the multipurpose vaccines were sold to Shangdong Province, and that they were issued to more than 210,000 local children. Although the Food and Drug Administration has stated that there has been no evidence of any case of adverse reactions or sickness caused by the vaccines, the incident still angered tens of thousands of parents since these vaccines were covered under the government subsidies and were mostly issued to toddlers.
As a parent, this has caused a great deal of panic among us. Even if my child did not receive the vaccine this time, is there any guarantee that the next batch of vaccines is free of problems, or that the vaccines that my child was issued before was problem-free? All we can do is to travel to Hong Kong or other places for vaccines.
Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said that the vaccines used in Taiwan were from companies with good reputation outside of China, and that there is not quality issues. The CDC also responded to the possibility of Chinese parents traveling to Taiwan for vaccine injection, saying vaccine injection is only open to Taiwanese citizens or people with residency permit, and that it's not available for citizens from other countries. The CDC ensured the public that there won't be any shortage of vaccines.
