Is Hualien Country Magistrate Fu Kun-Chi running for Taoyuan Mayor or not? After holding his silence, he finally held a press conference on July 23 to call for support - but, its support for KMT Candidate Apollo Chen, and not, for himself, suggesting that he himself in the end, is not running.


After remaining silent for a week, Hualien County Magistrate Fu Kun-Chi held a press conference on the morning of July 23 to announce for the first time whether he is running for Taoyuan. He expressed gratitude for the support from the residents in Taoyuan City. He then criticized the DPP, the current party in power, for doing a poor job governing Taiwan. He called on the public to support KMT candidate Apollo Chen.

(The upcoming 2018 mayoral election) will be a key battle. Therefore, with the utmost honesty, I call on the residents in Taoyuan City to support KMT Candidate Apollo Chen with all you have.

Fu said that solidarity will be the key for the KMT to take more offices at the 2018 election and to take majority seats at the 2020 Presidential Election. On the other hand, DPP candidate Liu Siao-Mei criticized Fu's move as a publicity stunt.

There have been rumors that he was going to run for mayor in Taipei and in Taoyuan. And now he won't run for anything. I guess he's just aiming to run for president.

It remains to be seen whether Fu's message will help garner more support for Apollo Chan. The KMT said that they will provide the best support for their candidates at all cities and counties.
