Before the arrival of Typhoon Maria, the fishermen in Taitung City caught a very rare fish: a five plus kilogram Epinephelus, possibly the heaviest fish of such species ever caught in waters near Taiwan. Researchers said that the fish lives in the deep sea, and might have been disrupted by the moving water due to the typhoon.
Taitung City in eastern Taiwan is experiencing high temperature today, while the typhoon has intensified the waves near the east coast. Taitung City Government has announced that the mountainous areas near the coast and all the rivers are controlled areas and have banned all activities due to the Typhoon Maria. Meanwhile, local fishermen in Taitung City's Chenggong Township caught an Epinephelus, a very rare fish. The fish weighs 5.4 kilograms and is currently being sold at high prices at the local fish market.
The Epinephelus weighs 5.4 kilograms, and it being sold at a whopping NT$1,760 per kilo at the local market.
The fishermen said that the fish might have been scared and moved away from its normal habitat. A researcher from the Eastern marine Biology Research Center said that the fish grows at a very slow pace at about 200g to 300g per year, and that this particular fish has grown for about 20 years before it was captured by the fisherman. It is quite possible, the expert said, that the fish was spooked away from its living area in deep sea by the moving current due to typhoon.
The moving waves and currents could have disrupted the fish's normal habitat. Therefore, when it needs to search for food, it had to swim in shallow water, which made it vulnerable.
The researcher said that the particular Epinephelus could be the biggest ever caught in waters near Taiwan. On the other hand, due to the fish's high economic value and artificial breeding, the fish is not listed under protected species.
