MND Planning to Spend NT$30B on New Tanks?|傳國防部編300億 向美採購百輛戰車

Taiwan's tanks are old and outdated, and the Ministry of National Defense will reportedly draft a NT$20-30 billion acquisition budget next year to buy 100 new tanks from the U.S. The ministry has not confirmed the reports.

The military's M60A3 and CM11 tanks are old and close to obsolete. According to reports, the Ministry of National Defense plans to spend NT$20 to 30 billion on two American tank battalions of around 100 M1A2 tanks. The sum includes training and five-year component costs. Those in favor of the acquisition say buying new tanks would be cheaper than upgrading Taiwan's existing tanks, and new tanks would minimize the threat of China's new tanks landing on Taiwan.

Based on the future development of the Communist military's landing combat models, we still need to maintain at least some scale of primary tank capabilities. (Taiwan) really doesn't have tanks to choose from besides M1A2s and American tanks. European countries aren't going to sell you any tanks.

Others say tanks are irrelevant given Taiwan's asymmetric warfare situation and the military is making the purchase because it thinks it will boost morale.

First of all, it would be a huge safety upgrade. Second, (military personnel) will think our military strength gets a huge boost because we have current American military equipment and be more confident about the situation in the Taiwan Strait because of it.

Both experts agree that 100 tanks is probably an acceptable number to all and the army has the budget for an acquisition of this scale.
