Typhoon Maria is heading for northern Taiwan. Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je says no decision has been made on whether there will be work on July 10 and it will depend on how quickly Maria approaches. In the mean time, precautionary measures have been taken to protect the people from flood and other potential disasters.
Taipei City workers are trimming trees along major roads and taking various preventive measures in preparation for Typhoon Maria.
We are trimming trees with higher branches and leafier trees in Taipei.
The Department of Environmental Protection is also clearing roadside gutters with slurry pumps and high-pressure hoses before workers finish the job manually. The city says it will make an announcement at 10 a.m. on the 10th whether there will be work in the afternoon.
Typhoon holidays are a nightmare for mayors. No matter what we do, people complain. It's a step-by-step decision-making process. What makes the decision especially difficult for Taipei is that northern Taiwan's "living circle" extends beyond Taipei and we can't make the decision unilaterally.
Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je says Taipei will not make a unilateral decision on canceling the work day because the decision will affect New Taipei and Keelung as well. New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu, who is currently in Singapore, will cut his trip short and return to Taiwan soon. Until then, Chu's deputy Lee Shu-chuan will be in charge of typhoon preparations. Interior Minister Yeh Jiunn-rong will oversee things at the central level.
