The seventh typhoon of this year, Prapiroon, has formed. It will move towards Japan's Okinawa and is not expected to have a direct impact on Taiwan. The Central Weather Bureau forecasts that the number of typhoons this year, will be slightly higher than average, with potentially three to five typhoons, that could hit Taiwan.
Families enjoy the nice weather in the park. Rainy season has ended, which means typhoon season is coming. The seventh typhoon of the season, Prapiroon, formed on the 29th and is moving towards Okinawa. It will be closest to Taiwan on July 1 and 2 but is not expected to affect the island.
There may be longer waves off of northern and eastern Taiwan on (July) 1 and 2. Everyone heading to the beach should be careful.
The Central Weather Bureau says the number of typhoons this year will be around average or slightly higher, with three to five expected to hit Taiwan. Due to El Nino, typhoons will form more to the east and farther away from Taiwan than usual. With more time on the water, this means they could develop into medium or severe typhoons by the time they reach Taiwan.
During El Nino, there are higher temperatures in the mid-Pacific. This makes the formation of typhoons more likely. Coming from farther away, they absorb more energy from the water and get stronger as they approach Taiwan.
The bureau says Taiwan is getting hotter for longer because of global warming and temperatures are expected to be higher than usual in July and August. More rain than usual is expected in July, and less rain than usual is expected in August and September.
