As July approaches, look out for new transportation regulations that's set to take effect. Starting July 1st, vehicles that break down and remain parked on highway shoulders for over an hour will be fined up to NT$1,200. Meanwhile, the fines for cars and motorcycles that illegally park in bus lanes will be raised to NT$1,200 and NT$900, respectively.
Buses approach the stop, but some have to swerve around illegally parked cars to get there. These inconsiderate drivers gravely affect the safety of bus passengers and other road users. Starting July 1, the fine for cars and motorcycles that are parked within 10 meters of a bus stop area will be raised to NT$1,200 for cars and NT$900 to NT$1,200 for motorcycles.
You can't park anywhere on the road if you add 10 meters to the bus stop area.
I'm in favor, it's better to abide by the rules.
On Aug. 7 last year, a highway police officer was killed and another was injured during an accident on National Freeway No. 3 while they were dealing with a malfunctioning vehicle. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications has therefore passed new regulations that reduce the amount of time malfunctioning vehicles can be parked on highway shoulders from two hours to one. If vehicles remain on highway shoulders for more than one hour, they will be fined NT$600 to NT$1,200. In the past, cars and motorcycles caught speeding or running red lights by traffic enforcement cameras only had to pay fines. A traffic infraction point system will be implemented for all of Taiwan's 34,000 tour buses on July 1.
Motorists who have six or more points deducted in half a year will have their driving licenses suspended for one month. The system will be expanded to minibuses sometime in the future.
When the police pull someone over, they should be able to know who the driver is and assign responsibility. However, for those cases reported by the public, there's no way of knowing who the responsible driver is. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications' plan to resolve the problem of not being able to know who the driver is and assign responsibility is to implement this system for tour buses starting July 1 and expand it in the future.
Additionally, parking lots will need to designate special spaces for the use of pregnant women or parents with children under the age of six by Dec. 16.
