American Institute in Taiwan Director Kin Moy will step down soon and be replaced by William Brent Christensen, who served as AIT deputy director in 2012. Taiwan's Presidential Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs said they welcome the personnel change. Christensen is familiar with Taiwan-U.S. affairs and has 29 years of diplomatic experience.

On the 27th, the American Institute in Taiwan announced William Brent Christensen would be replacing Kin Moy as AIT director. Christensen served as AIT deputy director from 2012 to 2015 and director of the State Department's Office of Taiwan Coordination before that. He has also served at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and has 29 years of diplomatic experience. Taiwan's Presidential Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs say they are looking forward to Christensen's arrival.

He is not only familiar with affairs in the Taiwan Strait, Taiwan relations and Taiwan-U.S. relations, he has also played a role in shaping these relations. Therefore, we can't wait for him to get here and we expect bilateral relations to deepen with him here.

Christensen played a role in Taiwan's inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program; the signing of the bilateral Agreement on Privileges, Exemptions and Immunities; and visits by senior U.S. government officials to Taiwan. Former lawmaker Lin Yu-fang, who is acquainted with Christensen, says he has the character of a career diplomat and the appointment is not a bad thing for bilateral relations.

He is very familiar with Taiwan and China and a serious, cautious guy. I don't think it's a bad thing because cross-strait relations are abysmal right now and the AIT director has an important role to play.

In regards to the Taiwan Travel Act and National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019, Lin says U.S. President Donald Trump and Congress still hold all the decision-making power when it comes to relations with Taiwan and bilateral relations at the very least shouldn't worsen under Christensen.
