The Executive Yuan has approved a construction plan for Taiwan's first national senior citizens hospital. The hospital will be built by National Cheng Kung University Hospital and have an intelligent medical and long-term care development and education center for older people. The hospital will cost NT$2.9 billion and will open in 2022 at the earliest.
The majority of patients at this hospital are senior citizens. Seniors account for at least 35 percent of outpatients at National Cheng Kung University Hospital. The hospital is therefore planning to build Taiwan's first dedicated medical center and open an intelligent medical and long-term care development and education center for seniors.
I have a lung tumor and am getting a biopsy today. (A hospital for seniors) would be somewhat helpful.
The plan, which has been approved by the Executive Yuan, includes elder care medical training programs, cooperation with the medical industry and long-term care programs. NCKU Hospital will provide NT$1.4 billion of the total cost of NT$2.9 billion. The center is expected to open in 2022.
Apart from medical services, the center will focus on geriatric medicine training. It will also be developed into a research and development center for geriatric pharmaceutical technology.
According to forecasts, Taiwan's senior population will surpass 20 percent in 2025. NCKU plans to have 350 beds at the center for general patients over 65 and patients with dementia or other conditions over 50. It will also gradually increase its staff of geriatric doctors from the current 20 to 75 so elderly patients can get the best possible care.
